update: weasel survivors
greetings y'all,
i want to thank everyone that’s checked out our site and stayed following us over the past year.
we have been under weasel attack since October of 2022, and much of our time has been spent trying to recover from the loss of our dear Faverolle rooster, Rex, our golden polish, CJ, another Fav rooster, six Doms, 2 Favs, 11 naturally brooded chicks, and 50 hatchery chicks. we saved one pullet, raised her on the porch, just got her to integrate and then she got got by a hawk. *facepalm*
the death toll has been staggering. so has the amount of labor and materials put in to create one solid winter weasel proof coop and a permanent brooder that is almost ready...hydraulic cement, salvaged wood, 2x4s and 1/8inch hardware cloth.
that said, we have a flock of survivors. five Faverolles are acting as Aunties to 2 hens who brooded naturally, and have 10 babes running around between them. Grey, the Dominique rooster, has become rather protective but i’m cool with his mad dad vibes. he’s doing his job well. the rest of the Dominiques (7) are quite loyal to him and even ganged up on Stuart, the new cat. (he’s good at killing mice).
